James O Hill, PhD had a dream to create a comprehensive center focused on wellness to go beyond traditional medicine; to build a model for the future of “health care” focused on wellness and not just sickness; to transform the way Americans think about their health and to focus on staying well instead of waiting until something is broken to fix it.
This dream emerged from more than 20 years of research and leadership in the field of obesity and nutrition at the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado. Dr. Hill and his team decided a new way of thinking was needed to treat lifestyle and not focus on the negatives of obesity. A new strategy was created to focus on wellness as a positive that allows you to achieve your goals in life, not the negatives of obesity and related diseases.
The University of Colorado and the Anschutz Foundation collectively invested $34 million to create this one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art center that opened in April 2012. Top researchers, scientists and a multi-disciplinary team work side-by-side with clinicians to develop and deliver wellness programs. The mission of the Center is to transform the lives of individuals and communities through science-based wellness strategies.
